Food Trends to Look Out For in 2023

Blog Item 1

Like in fashion, there are lots to look forward to in the food world in 2023. With a push for more clean, natural, sustainable food that supports our health and well-being as well as the health of the environment, many have begun to predict what food trends we can look forward to coming the new year. While much of this is still up in the air, here are some of the top food trends that are likely to be popular for much of the 2023 year:

A Push for Plant-Based Protein

Maintaining a healthier diet and lifestyle has become quite popular within the last few years for people of all ages. Many have made efforts to start going to the gym or found creative ways to work out at home, working with the guidelines we’ve adapted to following the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, pushing for a well-balanced diet has become increasingly emphasized, including ensuring one consumes the right amount of protein and other nutrients for a healthy lifestyle. While there are many sources of protein out there to enjoy to help reach your dietary goals, a movement for plant-based protein has taken the spotlight as a healthier alternative to consuming large amounts of meat or processed protein like protein powders or bars. For example, tofu, tempeh, lentils, and mycoprotein have become solid protein sources that help cut meat consumption for health, environmental, or ethical reasons. As a result, in 2023, we’ll likely see even more plant-based protein options on the market as well as an increase in the use of plant-based protein in restaurant dishes and prepared meals!

Sustainable Seafood

Another popular trend we’ll likely continue to see as we move into the new year is the increase in the use and availability of sustainable seafood. Sustainable seafood, according to NOAA Fisheries, is seafood (both wild-caught and farmed) that is managed under a system of enforced environmentally responsible practices. These practices are aimed to help prevent overfishing, rebuild depleted seafood stocks, minimize bycatch and protect a variety of species that may be pushing towards becoming endangered. Additionally, sustainable fishing practices help to conserve essential fish habitats to promote the health and long-term availability of a variety of fish and shellfish populations. As a result, there has been a strong push in recent years for regulation within the fishing industry and an emphasis on sustainability within seafood, similar to the standards upheld for food under the organic label.

Fermented Foods

Did you know that foods like kimchi and sauerkraut can provide various health benefits, making them foods many are working to incorporate into their diets this year? With a push for a healthier lifestyle, many have implemented fermented foods and drinks into their daily diets to help maintain their health and well-being goals. For example, fermented foods typically contain properties that are anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic, according to the NIH National Library of Medicine. Likely, 2023 will continue to promote the heavy availability and consumption of fermented foods at a higher level, including in restaurants, grocery stores, and more.

Healthier Snacks

As people prioritize their health, we may see a trend toward healthier snack options available more widely in 2023. With a strong push for fewer sugars, salts, and other additives within meals, many have begun to promote preparing foods and snacks ahead of time to maintain a healthier and balanced diet. Additionally, with the onslaught of social media, many have become more invested in ensuring that the snacks they enjoy are genuinely as healthy and supportive for their bodies as possible, making this a much more significant phenomenon within the food world in the next coming year. As a result, this could include increased availability of plant-based snacks and more snacks made with whole grains and other nutrient-rich ingredients!
