Sunday Bakeshop is a nostalgic Asian American passion project in Oakland, from the Sunday Family Hospitality Group, serving up our favorite classic French pastries with Asian twists. Chef Elaine Lau serves her playful creations like buttery croissants gilled with chocolate hojicha or sweet pineapple pork sausage and furikake, chewy matcha cookies, ube coconut snickerdoodles or Chex Mix coated in salty nori. Lau previously worked in Michelin-starred French restaurants and most recently spent time helping to develop recipes at Bake Sum, another popular Oakland Asian American pastry pop-up. Born and raised in Oakland, Lau grew up in her family’s Chinese restaurants and went on to attend culinary school. The Sunday Bakeshop menu takes inspiration from Asian snacks like Pocky and milk-flavored White Rabbit candy, as well as ingredients like togarashi, pandan and a pudding version of Thai mango sticky rice. Lau is recreating childhood favorites, like her high-end take on Hi-Chews: POG-flavored caramels made from the classic juice trifecta of passion fruit, orange, and guava juice.
