Established in 1861, Rancho Llano Seco has a rich history of balancing agriculture, live stock husbandry and conservation. The name Llano Seco, Spanish for 'dry plain', is a nod to the dry land wheat fields that have been a historical source of pride for the Rancho's farmers since its inception. The Rancho is bookended by the Sacramento River and Chico Creek, and is defined by the relationship between water and land.

The Wintu, Maidu, and Yana tribes were the original caretakers of the Sacramento River Valley, sustaining themselves with their skills as fishermen, hunters, and foragers. Rancho Llano Seco proudly carries on their tradition, encouraging symbiosis between their cultivated fields, untouched waterways, and wilderness corridors. Herding cattle on horseback is a lost art in the west, but Rancho Llano Seco cowboys take great pride in their ability to commune with their animals in this historic practice. This is a symbol of both their connection to the past as well as their practice of low carbon footprint farming.
