Cheese: Feed's All You Need Guide

Blog Item 1

The world of cheeses is one of endless possibilities! With over 1,000 different cheeses available worldwide, there’s bound to be a type you’ll love. From cheddar to gouda and everything in between, cheese is a true staple in so many of our hands. For today’s Pop’s All You Need Guide, we wanted to take you on a journey as we explore this unique world, including the history of cheese, a few of the different cheeses available, and all the tasty ways you can enjoy these cheeses in your own culinary feasts.

History of Cheese

While the origins of cheese making are not well known, it is believed it began over 4,000 years ago! The National Historic Cheese-Making Center notes that cheesemaking is closely linked to the domestication of milk-producing animals like sheep and is even referred to in Greek Mythology with Aristaeus as the god of cheesemaking. By the time of the Roman empire, though, cheesemaking had become a prevalent practice, continuing to spread cross-continentally further.

Although cheese was adopted early into many cuisines worldwide, it wasn’t until around the 17th century that cheese began to be produced within the United States. Slowly, though, the art of cheesemaking began to spread with early pioneers in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin and quickly became a staple within the American diet. Today, so many countries and cultures worldwide enjoy cheese as a primary food in their diet; in fact, over one-third of the milk produced within the United States alone goes into cheese production!

What Are the Most Common Types of Cheeses

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the history of cheese, it’s time to explore a few of the types of cheese you’ll likely come across at a grocery store. While there are more cheese varieties than you may realize, many of these are cheeses you’ve probably already enjoyed or are at least familiar with. Some of the main types of cheese include:

American

American cheese is one of the most popular types of cheese you can find. Its creamy texture makes it the perfect option for classic grilled cheeses, sandwiches, or even to enjoy with crackers and fruit (hello, charcuterie board!). Some ways you can use American cheese in your meals include this homemade nacho cheese sauce, these delicious cheeseburgers, and fan-favorite grilled cheese.

Brie

Another famous cheese you’ve likely heard of (or even tried) is brie! Brie is a soft, white cheese that is also considered a “dessert cheese,” or a cheese that is typically served after a salad or a main course meal with fruit and nuts. Brie can also be used within dessert recipes, such as baked brie in puff pie or caramelized pecan brie.

Cheddar

One cheese you can never go wrong with has to be cheddar cheese. Cheddar cheese comes in various types, including sharp cheddar, mild cheddar, and everything in between! As it matures, this cheese changes its texture and flavor and becomes crumbly with a unique profile. Some ways you can incorporate cheddar cheese into your meals such as Homestyle Chili or Baked Macaroni and Stuffed Shells!

Colby Jack

Fourth on our list of delicious cheeses is Colby Jack. This cheese variety combines Colby cheese and Monterey Jack cheese and makes for a tasty choice for anything requiring some cheesiness! Some ways you can enjoy colby jack cheese for your next meals include this unique and tasty Colby Jack cheesy bread, this Beer Cheese Dip, or this Breakfast Grilled Cheese.

Cream Cheese

You will know and love this one if you're a bagel fan. Cream cheese is a simple, soft, and mild variety invented by William Lawrence of Chester (who actually went on to start the Philadelphia cream cheese brand) in 1872! This cheese makes for the perfect option if you’re looking to make cheesecake or other dessert items, and it is also a staple in many different dishes as well. If you’re interested in finishing up any leftover cream cheese in your fridge, try this Red Velvet Pound Cake, this Smoked Salmon pasta, and this delicious New York Cheesecake for dessert.

Mozzarella Cheese

The final cheese on our list is the infamous Mozzarella cheese. This smooth and delicious cheese tastes great on almost anything; whether you’re into pizza or sandwiches or even want a delightful and easy Caprese salad, mozzarella cheese is a cheese you should have in your refrigerator.
